It's also good to see that Texas teachers might actually be able to teach science again - our teachers might actually be able to teach about evolution! http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/texassouthwest/stories/092408dntexevolution.13ec04c.html
Texas also doesn't like to hire teachers who have years of experience beyond about 15 or so and teachers pay on average above $400 a month for health insurance and it's more if you are paying for a family. I am surprised to see them ranked #7 for comfort. If one examines their salary scales they will also see that the salary only goes up by maybe $200 a year so in no way keeps up with in inflation.
Even in this bad economy, my (urban) district has seen progress. No complaints here.
I taught in Washington State for 20 years, then moved to TX this year. I am finding it very difficult to support my family; my wage increases in the future are insignificant (I already have a Master's Degree and am Nationally Certified), and health care deduction is OUTRAGEOUS! Other than those issues...I love my job here.
