TeacherPortal Comfort Score Index

We've taken a hard look at a lot of statistics and reports in hopes of identifying the best places for teachers...to teach and live!

Our Process

The Comfort Score examined average salaries (both starting and overall) and compared that to the cost of living. We then ranked each state by this metric to find which states were friendliest to teacher's - from a salary perspective.

What's Next

Tell us what you like about it. Tell us what you don't like about it. We'll keep working on this score to make sure we're finding the best states and cities (that'll be next) for teachers to teach & live. Thanks for help to make TeacherPortal a great resource for teachers nationwide.

Washington always finds excuses not to increase teacher salaries. However, our legislature makes sure they get theirs every year (COLA +)

What is the formula for your Comfort Score?

You really should divide Alaska teacher salaries into two groups: 2/3 of population live "off the road system" of North America. 1/3 live "on the road system" in Fairbanks, Anchorage, etc. The salary difference between rural and urban is about 20,000. The salary where I teach is 20K higher although I lived only 150 miles from Fairbanks, but the only transport is by bush plane. Fairbank salary is typically of many American cities. There is a very low cost of living for teachers in off-road communities because housing/utitilies are provided by the School District. But many people are uncomfortable living that far from hospitals, police, libraries, Walmart, etc. Fairbanks has Lowes, Walmart, Barnes&Noble, movie theaters, etc.

Your comfort zone for New Hampshire is way off. New Hampshire salaries are around 24 in the country but to live in southern new hampshire it is the 6th most expensive place to live. New hampshie has not been Cow Hampshire for along time.
